Glaucoma is considered a serious illness and one of the leading causes of blindness in Spain.

More than one million Spanish people, older than 40 years of age, suffer from this ocular condition. About 50% people do not know that they are suffering from glaucoma, since it is an eye disease that presents no symptoms until very advanced stages. It is known as "silent blindness."

This eye disease causes an optic nerve damage due to a sharp rise in ocular tension as a result of the imbalance between aqueous humor production and its evacuation. The irreparable damage of the optic nerve produces a progressive loss of vision that might even lead to total blindness.

Family History of Glaucoma: The risk of developing the disease depends on having a close relatives with glaucoma. So that it is advisable a medical examination.

Elderly people: After 50 years of age Glaucoma is more common, especially after 60.

Myopia: Myopic eyes have more susceptible optic nerves for suffering an injury than non-myopic eyes.

Old Eye injuries.

At present, surgical procedure is frecuently indicated for the efficient treatment of glaucoma. New non-perforating techniques allow greater safety and fewer complications compared to traditional techniques. However, and depending on the patient, it is more suitable performing the trabeculectomy.
